Fiji Exemption Status for Spouse of a Fiji Citizen
A non-citizen legally married to a Fiji citizen may apply for exemption status, which lets them enter and reside in Fiji without a work or visitor permit. It is granted for one year initially (or less if the passport is valid for under a year) and remains valid as long as the holder stays legally married to the Fiji-citizen spouse, with extensions to the satisfaction of the Director of Immigration. Exemption holders are exempt from a student permit for tertiary education but must still obtain a work permit to take up employment. The application uses the 'permit other than work/residence' category at FJD 650.05. Spouses can later seek citizenship by registration (FJD 514.15) after being lawfully present 3 of the 5 years before applying, with a permanent residence permit required from 2030.

Under the 2026 immigration and citizenship reforms, a permanent residence permit becomes a mandatory stepping stone to citizenship by naturalisation from 1 January 2035 (and for spouses applying for citizenship by registration from 1 January 2030).
