From 1 January 2025 Suriname introduced a multiple-entry voucher aimed at frequent border crossers, currently applying only to Brazilian citizens and French citizens resident in French Guiana. The voucher costs USD 75 (or EUR 75), is valid for three months from the first entry and permits up to five entries within that period, expiring after three months regardless of entries used. It is obtained through the VFS Global e-Visa portal, or for French citizens at the Consulate-General in Cayenne or the branch office in Saint Laurent du Maroni. Each stay is limited to 90 days; the voucher does not authorise work, study or residence. Children aged 0-2 are exempt.

Since 1 May 2023 nationals of most countries (including the US, Canada, UK, EU, Japan, Australia, Brazil and most of Latin America) may enter Suriname without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or visiting family and friends, but must purchase a single-entry online Entry Fee before arrival. The fee is USD 50 (or EUR 50) and the authorisation is paid through the official VFS Global e-Visa portal at least 72 hours before travel; a fresh entry fee is required for each entry, including re-entry from neighbouring French Guiana or Guyana. The transit visa is a single-entry authorisation for visa-required travellers passing through Suriname en route to a third country, allowing a stay of up to 72 hours. The business visa is for foreign nationals travelling to Suriname for meetings, conferences, training, internships and investment exploration, and is issued as a multiple-entry visa allowing stays of up to 90 days per visit. Validity ranges from 60 days up to 24 months depending on nationality, with a 5-year multiple-entry option available to US passport holders. Foreign nationals admitted to a recognised Surinamese educational institution for full-time study apply, where visa-required, for an MKV-based long-stay authorisation and then a student residence permit. The student must show a letter of acceptance for a full-time course, sufficient funds, health insurance, a police clearance and a recent medical report (issued within three months). The application should be filed at least three months before the course start date through the regional consulate or the Immigration Department. The permit is generally valid for one year and renewable for the duration of the programme. Student status does not normally allow part-time work, and the standard residence-permit deposit of USD 150 applies.

Under the Work Permits Foreign Nationals Act, an employer must obtain a work permit (werkvergunning) before employing a foreign national; the obligation and application rest on the employer, who files with the director of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Youth Affairs. The permit is typically valid for one year and renewable, usually tied to the employment contract. Decisions are made within 30 days (extendable by a further 30), and since November 2024 a One Stop Unit targets 21-day combined processing of short-stay, work and residence applications, driven largely by the oil-and-gas boom. The fee is SRD 75 per application in most cases, or USD 300 for employment in interior gold mining. A work permit does not grant residency, so staff staying over 90 days also need a residence permit. Suriname grants citizenship by descent under the Nationality and Residence Act: a child acquires Surinamese citizenship at birth if at least one parent is a Surinamese citizen, regardless of the country of birth. This is the principal non-residence route to a Surinamese passport, as Suriname has no citizenship-by-investment programme and generally does not recognise dual citizenship. Persons claiming citizenship by descent register and document their parentage at a Surinamese mission or the Civil Registry (Burgerzaken); naturalisation, by contrast, requires about five years of residence, Dutch-language proficiency and renunciation of prior nationality. Government fees for the descent registration are not publicly standardised.

They are exempt from the short-stay authorisation (MKV) requirement and may obtain a residence permit either for a defined time (up to two years) or for an indefinite period. The temporary residence permit (verblijfsvergunning voor bepaalde tijd) authorises foreign nationals to live in Suriname for a defined period of up to two years, renewable, and is the standard status held after an MKV-based entry. Applications are made to the Department of Aliens Affairs (Hoofdafdeling Vreemdelingenzaken) under the Ministry of Justice and Police, supported by a letter to the Minister, passport, proof of means of existence and a processing deposit of USD 150 (or the SRD equivalent at the Central Bank rate) plus a SRD 1.50 stamp fee. Foreign nationals (other than persons of Surinamese origin and certain exempt groups) who intend to stay in Suriname for more than 90 days must first obtain a Machtiging tot Kort Verblijf (MKV, Authorization for Temporary Stay) from a Surinamese diplomatic or consular mission before travelling, then use it to obtain a KV entry visa. The MKV is the gateway stage to a residence permit and must be applied for about three months before departure; foreigners already in Suriname on a tourist or business visa cannot apply for an MKV from inside the country. Persons of Surinamese origin enjoy a privileged route to it. Indefinite residence underpins the path to naturalisation, which requires about five years of residence, Dutch-language proficiency and renunciation of prior citizenship, since Suriname does not generally recognise dual citizenship.
