Student Visa
Type D visa for non-EU students enrolled in Italian universities or higher-education programs over 90 days, typically using the Universitaly pre-enrollment portal. Requires proof of financial means (monthly subsistence of roughly EUR 460; for university enrollment from 2026/27 consulates have applied a higher annual benchmark around EUR 10,180), accommodation, EUR 30,000 health insurance and return funds. The 1-year study permit is renewable for the course duration, allows part-time work up to 20 hours/week, and can be converted to a work permit after graduation.
Language Course Visa
Study-visa subtype for enrollment in an Italian language school: the course must be full-time with at least 20 hours of class per week (commonly 20+ weeks), at a recognized institution, for stays over 90 days up to one year. Requires proof of payment/enrollment, financial means of roughly EUR 460 per month of stay, accommodation and health insurance. The study permit matches the course length and is generally not convertible into open-ended residence.
Internship / Trainee Visa
For non-EU nationals undertaking an approved internship or vocational training in Italy (Art. 27(1)(f) of the Immigration Act, within annual training quotas). Requires a training project (Progetto Formativo e di Orientamento) drawn up by the Italian host and approved by the competent Region under a tirocinio convention; internship duration is 3 to 12 months and the permit is not renewable beyond it. Applicant must show financial means (around EUR 1,000 per month of stay), accommodation and insurance.

Digital Nomad Visa
For non-EU highly skilled remote workers (employees) and digital nomads (freelancers) working with technology for employers/clients outside Italy, launched April 2024. Requires annual income of at least EUR 24,789 (three times the healthcare-exemption minimum; some consulates apply ~EUR 28,000), 6+ months remote-work experience, a degree or 3 years professional experience, accommodation in Italy and EUR 30,000 health insurance. Leads to a 1-year residence permit renewable annually; quota-free.
Self-Employment Visa
For non-EU freelancers, entrepreneurs, professionals, artists and corporate officers, subject to a very small annual quota (650/year under the 2026-2028 flows decree). Requires a nulla osta from the competent Questura, a Chamber of Commerce attestation of adequate financial resources for the activity (parametri di riferimento, in practice from ~EUR 15,000 up depending on activity), prior-year income above the healthcare-exemption minimum (~EUR 8,500) and suitable accommodation. The resulting self-employment permit lasts up to 2 years and is renewable.
Startup / Entrepreneur Visa
Self-employment visa (within the small annual lavoro autonomo quota) for non-EU founders of 'innovative startups' under the Italian Startup Act (DL 179/2012). Requires at least EUR 50,000 in available funds dedicated to the startup (EUR 100,000 commonly required to join an existing one), with a fast-track nulla osta issued by the Italia Startup Visa Committee, typically within 30 days. The 1-year self-employment visa/permit is renewable while the business operates and can lead to long-term residence after 5 years.
Skilled Work Visa
For stays over 90 days to work. Requires employer sponsorship / a work permit before you can apply, so eligibility is conditional. Issued under national rules -- apply at the consulate of your destination country. Fees and processing times vary by country.
Skilled Work Visa
Quota-based employment route: an Italian employer applies for a nulla osta on annual 'click days' under the flows decree (2026 quota: 164,850 total entries, of which 76,200 non-seasonal subordinate work). After the nulla osta, the worker obtains a type D work visa and a residence permit tied to the contract (up to 1 year fixed-term, up to 2 years for open-ended contracts), renewable and convertible. Salary must meet the applicable national collective agreement (CCNL).
Skilled Work Visa
Quota-exempt permit for highly qualified non-EU workers with a degree, 5 years of professional experience, or 3 years in the last 7 for ICT professionals. Requires a binding job offer of at least 6 months with gross salary not below the national average (about EUR 33,500-35,000/year in 2026; reduced ~1.2x threshold for shortage sectors such as ICT and healthcare). Permit valid up to 2 years (contract +3 months if shorter), renewable, with intra-EU mobility after 12-18 months and family reunification without income waiting periods.
Seasonal Work Visa
Quota-based visa for seasonal jobs in agriculture and tourism/hospitality (2026 quota: 88,000, rising to 90,000 by 2028). The employer obtains a nulla osta on sector click days (agriculture 12 Jan 2026, tourism 9 Feb 2026); the permit lasts up to 9 months in a 12-month period and is not renewable beyond that, though repeat seasonal workers get priority and a multi-year seasonal permit is possible. Employer must provide suitable accommodation.
Intra-Company Transfer Visa
Quota-exempt permit (EU ICT Directive, Art. 27-quinquies of the Immigration Act) for managers, specialists and trainees transferred from a non-EU group company to an Italian entity of the same group. The worker must have been employed by the sending company for at least 3 months; maximum transfer duration is 3 years for managers/specialists and 1 year for trainees, followed by a 3-month cooling-off period before a new ICT application. Allows intra-EU mobility under the ICT scheme.

Golden Visa (Residence by Investment)
2-year residence visa for non-EU nationals investing EUR 250,000 in an innovative startup, EUR 500,000 in an Italian company, EUR 2 million in government bonds, or donating EUR 1 million to philanthropy. Nulla osta is issued online by the Investor Visa Committee within 30 days (no fee); the investment must be made within 3 months of arrival. Permit renewable for 3 more years if the investment is maintained; no minimum-stay requirement; EU long-term residence possible after 5 years.
Non-Lucrative / Passive Income Visa
For financially self-sufficient non-EU nationals (including retirees) who can live in Italy without working, on passive income only (pensions, dividends, rents). Consulates require stable passive income of roughly EUR 31,000+ per year for a single applicant (about +20% for a spouse, +5% per child) plus suitable accommodation in Italy. Grants a 1-year residence permit renewable while requirements are met; no work of any kind is permitted; leads to EU long-term residence after 5 years.

Working Holiday Visa
Bilateral youth-mobility scheme for nationals of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, aged 18-30 (18-35 for Canada and Australia), allowing a 12-month stay. Work is generally limited to 6 months total with max 3 months per employer, except Canadians who may work the full 12 months; Canadians may participate twice and must show about EUR 1,900 in funds. The visa cannot be extended or renewed.

Family Reunification Visa
Allows non-EU residents of Italy holding a permit of 1+ year to bring their spouse, minor children, dependent adult children and (in limited cases) dependent parents. The sponsor must show suitable housing and annual income of at least the social allowance (EUR 7,101.12 in 2026) plus 50% per family member; the nulla osta is requested online from the Sportello Unico (statutory issuance within 90, max 150 days) and is valid 6 months. Family members receive a permit of the same duration as the sponsor's, with full work rights.
Spouse / Partner Visa
Spouses, registered partners and direct family members of Italian (and EU) citizens qualify under the EU free-movement regime (Legislative Decree 30/2007): the entry visa and the 5-year residence card (carta di soggiorno per familiare di cittadino UE) are issued free of charge with priority processing. No income or housing thresholds apply for the spouse of an Italian citizen, and the card gives full work rights; permanent residence follows after 5 years, and citizenship by marriage is possible after 2 years' legal residence in Italy (B1 Italian required).
Ancestry / Repatriation
Recognition of Italian citizenship by bloodline, radically restricted by Decree-Law 36/2025 (converted as Law 74/2025, in force 24 May 2025): applicants born abroad now generally qualify only with a parent or grandparent born in Italy (or a parent who resided in Italy for 2 continuous years before the applicant's birth), ending the previous unlimited-generation rule. Applications filed or appointments booked by 27 March 2025 are processed under the old rules. The consular fee is EUR 600 per adult applicant (non-refundable) and statutory processing can take up to 36 months; successful applicants receive full citizenship and an EU passport.

Religious Worker Visa
Quota-exempt visa for ministers of religion, members of religious orders and persons carrying out religious or pastoral missions with denominations recognized in Italy. Requires documentation of religious status and an invitation/attestation from the Italian religious institution (Curia or equivalent body), plus means of support and accommodation provided by the community. The residence permit for religious reasons follows the mission length (typically up to 1 year) and is renewable while the mission continues.
Long-Term Residence Permit
Open-ended EU long-term resident status (former carta di soggiorno) for non-EU nationals after 5 years of continuous legal residence in Italy. Requires annual income at least equal to the social allowance (~EUR 7,100), suitable housing, no serious criminal record and Italian language at A2 level (test or recognized certificate). The status is permanent (card updated every 10 years), grants near-equal treatment with nationals and facilitated mobility to other EU states; total application costs are roughly EUR 130-180 including the electronic permit.
