Slovenia Schengen Short-Stay Visa (Type C) - Tourism

The Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa is the standard authorisation for tourism and short visits to Slovenia and the wider Schengen area, permitting stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Slovenian diplomatic missions and consular posts issue it; many nationalities are visa-exempt for short stays. The standard fee is EUR 90 for adults (EUR 45 for children aged 6-12) since the 2024 Schengen fee increase. Applicants must demonstrate purpose of travel, sufficient funds, accommodation, travel medical insurance and intent to return. The visa does not authorise work or lead to residence; the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation will apply to visa-exempt visitors once operational.

The Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa also covers business visits to Slovenia - meetings, negotiations, conferences, trade fairs and similar short professional activities - for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. It does not authorise taking up employment; work in Slovenia requires a single residence and work permit. The standard fee is EUR 90 for adults. Applicants must show an invitation from a Slovenian business or event organiser, sufficient funds, accommodation, travel medical insurance and proof of ties to their home country. Many nationalities are visa-exempt for short business visits and will instead need ETIAS once it is operational.

Slovenia Temporary Residence Permit for Digital Nomads

Introduced on 21 November 2025, this permit is for non-EU/EEA nationals who work remotely via information and communication technologies for an employer or client based outside Slovenia, or who are self-employed abroad. The applicant must not enter the Slovenian labour market. The means-of-subsistence requirement is monthly funds of at least twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia (roughly EUR 3,204/month against the 2025 average net wage of about EUR 1,602). The permit is issued for up to one year and cannot be extended; a holder may reapply only six months after the previous permit expires. Government charges are about EUR 13 for the application, EUR 102 for issuance of the first permit and EUR 15.47 for printing the residence card. Applications are filed at a Slovenian diplomatic mission or consulate abroad, or at any administrative unit for those already legally residing in Slovenia. Digital nomads may bring family members immediately, without restrictions tied to the length of stay or permit validity. Because the permit is non-extendable and does not provide labour-market access, it does not by itself build toward permanent residence.

  • Study: Incidental study permitted; main purpose must remain remote work.
  • Family: Family may reunite immediately, without duration-of-stay restrictions.

Holders may change workplace with the same employer, change employers, or work for several employers without a new permit, on notification to the administrative unit. Slovenia EU Blue Card (Highly Qualified Employment)

The EU Blue Card is a single permit for highly qualified employment, for non-EU nationals with at least a higher-education qualification and an employment contract of at least one year. Effective 21 July 2025 the salary threshold was lowered to at least the average gross annual salary in Slovenia (previously 1.5x that figure), calculated from the average gross monthly wage last published in the Official Gazette (the average gross monthly wage was about EUR 2,536 in 2025, i.e. roughly EUR 30,400/year). The card is issued for three months beyond the contract, up to a maximum of two years, and may be extended for up to three years. In the first two years the holder must obtain consent to change employer or workplace; afterwards no further application is needed. Blue Card holders benefit from facilitated EU mobility and family reunification, and time held counts toward permanent residence after five years.

Slovenia Single Permit for Seasonal Work (over 90 days)

For seasonal work exceeding 90 days, non-EU nationals need a single permit for residence and seasonal work, issued for the duration of the employment or work contract with the same employer/contractor and extendable, provided total seasonal work does not exceed six months (exceptionally seven months) in a calendar year. Seasonal work under 90 days uses a simpler short-term work permit (e.g. up to 90 days in agriculture). The single permit is issued by the administrative unit with consent from the Employment Service of Slovenia (ZRSZ); the first permit is filed at a Slovenian mission abroad or, in some cases, by the employer at the administrative unit. The work must be inherently linked to a season of high labour demand. Seasonal-work time does not count toward permanent residence.

Slovenia Residence and Work Permit for Company Founder / Foreign Representative

Non-EU nationals who establish and manage a Slovenian company (most commonly a d.o.o. limited-liability company or s.p. sole trader) can obtain residence via a work permit for a foreign representative (director/procurator) combined with a single residence and work permit. Where the company has operated for less than six months, the applicant must show an investment of at least EUR 30,000 in the company. A company with ten or fewer workers may obtain no more than one foreign-representative work permit; majority owners (51%+ of a d.o.o.) may instead receive an employment permit without labour-market testing. Company registration is free at a SPOT point (about EUR 300-500 via a notary) and takes roughly one week. The permit is valid up to two years and renewable; continuous legal residence counts toward permanent residence after five years.

  • Work: Work as the company's representative/director; majority owners exempt from labour-market testing.

Eligible members are the spouse or long-term/registered partner, minor or adult unmarried children (including adopted and step-children), parents and parents-in-law, and, in exceptional circumstances, other relatives. Applications may be lodged at a Slovenian mission abroad or at an administrative unit; the migration authority decides within 90 days, with the overall procedure typically taking four to six months. The permit aligns with the sponsor's and is renewable; family members may later qualify for permanent residence (after two years for family of a Slovenian citizen or of a permanent-residence/refugee holder).

  • Work: Family members generally gain free access to the labour market.
  • Study: Study permitted.
  • Residency after 5 years
  • Family: This permit is itself the family-reunification route for spouse, children and dependants.

Slovenia Temporary Residence Permit in the Interest of the Country

A discretionary temporary residence permit for foreigners whose stay is in the national interest of Slovenia - typically in education, science, culture, sport, the economy or other fields of state interest. A state authority or the competent ministry submits a proposal to the Government stating the interest, together with the foreigner's consent to the procedure, proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the full validity period and adequate health insurance. The Government decides and the Ministry of the Interior issues the permit, after a security check. The permit may be issued for up to five years and is renewable, and continuous legal residence counts toward permanent residence after five years. This is a select, case-by-case route rather than a points-based talent scheme.

  • Work: Scope of activity follows the stated national interest; may include work.
  • Study: Study/research permitted where it serves the stated interest.
  • Residency after 5 years
  • Family: Family reunification possible under the general rules.

Slovenia Permanent Residence Permit / EU Long-Term Resident Status

Third-country nationals may obtain a permanent residence permit after five years of continuous and lawful residence in Slovenia on a temporary residence permit; the permit then allows residence without restriction on duration or purpose. Study and vocational-training time counts as half, while time as a seasonal worker, posted worker, intra-corporate transferee, daily migrant worker or under temporary protection does not count. Applicants must show sufficient means of subsistence, a clean criminal record, health insurance and a valid travel document, and - for applications submitted from 1 November 2024 - a certificate of A2-level Slovenian. The parallel EU long-term resident status is granted on the same five-year basis and facilitates mobility to other EU states. Family members of a Slovenian citizen or of a permanent-residence/refugee holder may qualify after only two years.

  • Work: Unrestricted access to the labour market.
  • Study: Unrestricted study rights.
  • Residency after 5 years
  • Family: Family of a PR holder may obtain permanent residence after two years.
