Standard Schengen short-stay visa for third-country nationals visiting Luxembourg for tourism, visiting family/friends or short non-work purposes for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Many nationalities are visa-exempt for short stays; those who are not apply at the competent consulate or visa centre. The standard fee is EUR 90 (EUR 45 for children aged 6-12; free for children under 6 and certain categories; a reduced EUR 35 applies to nationals of countries with EU visa-facilitation agreements such as Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Georgia, North Macedonia, Armenia and Azerbaijan). A type C visa does not authorise paid employment, and decisions are normally issued within 15 calendar days (extendable to 30-45 days in complex cases). It does not lead to residence; longer or working stays require a long-stay (type D) visa and a residence permit.

The permit is valid for 1 year or the study cycle if shorter and is renewable. Students may work an average of up to 15 hours per week outside study time (unlimited during holidays and for doctoral research). After completing a Master's or defending a PhD, graduates may apply for a 12-month permit to seek work or start a business, and study time may count toward later residence.

Independent long-term resident status is possible after 5 years.
