Spouse / Partner Visa

Residence for Foreign Spouse of a Saudi Citizen

A foreign spouse of a Saudi citizen receives a residence permit (Iqama) sponsored by the Saudi spouse via the General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat), conditional on an officially approved and authenticated marriage (prior Ministry of Interior marriage permission is required). The Iqama is renewable and exempt from expat dependent levies, but does not itself confer work rights or automatic citizenship; wives of Saudi men may apply for naturalisation after several years, husbands of Saudi women face stricter rules. Residency can lapse on divorce or death of the Saudi spouse unless children or humanitarian grounds exist.

Expatriate workers holding an eligible Iqama and profession can sponsor their spouse, children (sons under 18-25 depending on status, unmarried daughters) and in some cases parents for residence. The permanent family visa costs SAR 2,000, after which each dependent receives an Iqama and the sponsor pays the dependent levy of SAR 400 per dependent per month (SAR 4,800/year).
