Mongolia's employment route (historically the HG classification, organised in current practice into C-category employment sub-classes covering economic sectors such as construction, mining, technology, finance, agriculture, healthcare and transport) is for foreign nationals taking up work with a Mongolian employer. The employer must first obtain a pre-work permit from the General Authority for Labour and Social Welfare before the worker applies for the visa permission and visa; the work permit is granted for up to one year and is extendable up to one year at a time. Employers pay a monthly workplace fee of roughly twice the minimum wage per foreign employee unless exempted by Cabinet resolution. After entry the worker applies for a C3 employment residence permit within 21 days. The visa requires an Immigration Agency permission and is then issued at a consulate.

Foreign managers or representatives posted to the branch or representative office of a foreign legal entity in Mongolia are handled under the B3 sub-class of the investor/representative route (historically part of the T classification). The visa requires Immigration Agency permission obtained by the Mongolian branch or office, and after entry the transferee applies within 21 days for a B3 residence permit, initially issued for up to one year and extendable. This route covers executives transferred from a parent company rather than locally hired staff, who instead use the C employment route with a labour work permit.

Mongolia's investor route (the former T classification, organised in current practice into B-category sub-classes) is for foreign investors and the senior managers or representatives they appoint. B1 covers investors or shareholders of a foreign-invested enterprise, B2 covers an investor's appointed representative or executive management, and B3 covers managers or representatives of a foreign legal entity's branch or representative office, each with corresponding family sub-classes. The visa requires Immigration Agency permission and is processed in about three to five working days. After entry the investor applies within 21 days for an investor residence permit, initially issued for up to one year and extendable for up to three years at a time. Official immigration pages do not publish a minimum investment threshold; investors should confirm current capital requirements with the Investment and Trade Agency.

Under a bilateral arrangement in force since 2022, Mongolia offers a Work and Holiday Maker visa to Australian nationals aged 18 to 30 (under 31 at the time of application), capped at around 100 places per year. Applicants apply through the official e-visa portal evisa.mn and no longer need to attend the embassy. They must hold a tertiary qualification or have completed at least two years of undergraduate study, show savings of at least AUD 5,000 (excluding flights if not yet purchased), and hold an onward ticket or funds to buy one. The visa allows a holiday of up to one year with incidental work permitted during the stay.

The F1 family-type residence permit is for foreign nationals married to, or in a documented family relationship with, a Mongolian citizen. The SH religious visa is for foreign nationals coming to Mongolia to work or stay under the auspices of a registered religious organisation. The residence-permit government processing fee is in the order of 135,000 MNT plus about USD 7 for the residence card. Activities are limited to the religious purposes approved for the sponsoring organisation.

The A (diplomatic) and O (official) visas are for holders of diplomatic and official passports, UN and specialised-agency staff and senior officials holding laissez-passer, and persons travelling on official business or at the invitation of Mongolian government, municipal or parliamentary bodies, including under intergovernmental agreements. They are issued on the basis of an official note or request from the sending authority or Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the fee is frequently waived depending on purpose and reciprocity. These categories also cover certain official journalists travelling under government or international-organisation auspices.
