Under a unilateral visa-free regime, citizens of all EU member states and around 40-50 other countries (including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea) may enter Tajikistan without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism or short visits. The list was significantly expanded from 1 May 2024. Visa-free entry does not cover the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, which still requires a separate GBAO permit, and it does not authorise work, study or long-term residence. Foreigners staying beyond the permitted period or for other purposes must obtain the appropriate visa, and stays generally require registration with the migration authorities.

Tajikistan's electronic visa, launched in June 2016 and issued for tourism through the official portal evisa.tj, is open to citizens of more than 100 countries who are not eligible for visa-free entry. The e-visa is valid for 90 days from issue and permits a stay of up to 60 days, for single entry ($30) or multiple entry ($50). Travellers visiting the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO, the Pamir region) must add the optional GBAO permit for an extra $20 during the same application. The e-visa does not authorise work, study or residence, and foreigners must register their stay within the required period after entry.

The consular tourist visa (category T) is the embassy-issued route for nationals who cannot use the e-visa or visa-free entry, issued for single entry and a stay not exceeding 60 days, and is not subject to extension or change to another category. Applicants provide a hotel reservation, travel itinerary, and optionally a letter of invitation from a licensed Tajik tour operator. Fees vary by mission and duration (for example, around GBP 20 for a 60-day tourist visa at the London embassy). Travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan region requires a separate GBAO permit. Under bilateral and CIS agreements, citizens of several post-Soviet states enter Tajikistan visa-free. Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and Moldova may enter and stay without a fixed visa-free time limit, while citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine may stay up to 90 days. These travellers still must register with the migration service after entry (commonly within a few working days), and the regime is for visits rather than automatic work or residence rights, although some CIS nationals benefit from simplified work-authorisation procedures. The arrangement reflects free-movement-style ties within the CIS region.

The transit visa (category TP) is issued to foreigners travelling through Tajikistan to a third country by air or land for up to 72 hours. No transit visa is required for airside transit at Dushanbe International Airport where the traveller does not cross the state border. Applicants must show a valid visa for the onward destination (where required) and onward travel tickets. The transit category is not for stays or any work, study or residence purpose. Visa-free and e-visa-eligible travellers typically rely on those routes instead.

The business visa (category K) is for commercial activity, meetings, negotiations and conferences, and may be issued for single, double or multiple entry. With a supporting invitation it can be valid for up to two years. Applicants provide a covering letter from a foreign company and an invitation from a Tajik organisation. A business e-visa is also available online for short business trips (90-day validity, up to 60 days' stay). Consular fees vary by duration and entry type (for example, roughly GBP 60-200 at the London embassy). The visa permits business activity but not local employment, which requires a work visa and work permit.

The educational visa (category O - academic O-1 and practice/internship O-2) is issued to foreign nationals admitted to a recognised Tajik educational institution, for a period of up to nine months, and is renewed where the course of study runs longer. Applicants need an unconditional admission/enrolment letter and a petition from the institution, plus a notarised passport translation, an HIV/AIDS-free certificate and medical Form 038/u. After arrival students register with the local police within three days and submit documents to the Migration Service for a one-year registration; longer programmes are renewed annually. The visa does not authorise employment.

Before a foreign national may work, the Tajik employer must obtain a work permit (razresheniye na rabotu) from the Migration Service under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Tajikistan operates an annual foreign-worker quota by sector: employers either apply for an allocation under the quota or, for roles outside quota categories, obtain an individual permit. The employer must be registered in Tajikistan and justify the foreign hire, submitting company registration, the employment contract, the worker's credentials and supporting documents. Permits are typically issued for up to one year and are renewable, and underpin extension of the worker's labour visa and registration. CIS nationals benefit from simplified arrangements.

The work (labour) visa, category M, authorises a foreign national to take up employment with a Tajik employer and is normally issued for an initial period of up to three months, extendable in-country on the basis of an issued work permit. It is applied for after the employer secures the necessary work authorisation, and applicants provide a petition from the inviting organisation and a signed labour or civil contract. Foreigners staying over three months must also present an HIV/AIDS-free medical certificate and register with the migration service. CIS nationals (Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus) benefit from simplified procedures. The work visa pairs with the separate Migration Service work permit.

The investment visa (category C / investor) is for foreign nationals investing in or running an enterprise in Tajikistan, issued for up to two years (some missions cite up to one year), with multiple entry. The application is supported by a company letter and confirmation of the investment from the State Committee on Investments and State Property Management. Tajikistan does not run a passive golden-visa or citizenship-by-investment programme; this is an active-business route tied to a genuine investment. Investment-category holders are exempt from the standard over-three-months HIV/AIDS certificate requirement. The visa can underpin a later residence-permit application.

• Residency: Active-investment route; supports a residence-permit application for long-term stay. No CBI programme exists.

The spouse visa (category HSH / ХШ) is issued to the foreign spouse of a Tajik citizen, for a period not exceeding three months with subsequent extension, on single entry. The principal supporting document is the marriage certificate together with the applicant's request. Holders register with the migration service after arrival and can extend the visa in-country, with marriage to a citizen providing a basis to apply for a residence permit and, over time, naturalisation (the usual continuous-residence requirement is around five years, or three years in some cases). The visa does not in itself grant work authorisation.

The immigrant visa (category ID / ИД) is issued to foreigners intending to settle in Tajikistan, for a period not exceeding three months with subsequent in-country extension until a residence permit is granted. Applicants submit a detailed written request, proof of sufficient funds to cover living costs, and a clearance letter from law-enforcement bodies. It is the entry route that bridges to the residence permit issued by the Department of Visas and Registration (OVIR) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
